Being professional is not taught as a university course, although, one needs to inculcate the professional etiquettes within oneself. With gradual development and required upgrade, be it students or even working professionals, the all-round qualities need to be honed with the passage of time. Inability to do the same could result in possible rupture of one’s public and private relations, affecting the individual as a whole.

Apart from the general requirements, in case of professionalism, the following factors need to be paid attention to:

    Collaboration and Teamwork

No one wants their ideas and strategies to be copied and implemented. Moreover, it’s not asked of anyone to give away his/her plans. However, when you collaborate with your colleagues, share your plans with them, debate on the strategies, and make a decisive change together, the feeling of satisfaction is incomparable . This is where the maturity for a fruitful teamwork comes into play.

The ability to collaborate with someone includes give-and-take relationship. You explore new boundaries and help your team-members do the same. Teamwork requires a lot of patience, which helps to harness the ability to understand the members, motivate them, and consequently, to lead them.

When you know how to work with a team, then the experience drives the wheel of leading the teams of individuals, or even multiple teams. While leading a group, one needs to maintain a balance between being assertive as well as being supportive. You just can’t delegate work to them because you are experienced, unless you have got what it takes to prove that you can lead by example.

Apart from just paving the way for the members, a prolific leader is also exceptionally well at mentoring the ones who need guidance.

The mentorship can be defined as a relationship in which a more experienced personnel shares his/her expertise and knowledge with a comparatively less experienced individual or mentee. The age of a mentor should never be confused with the experience.

For instance, a person mentoring others to write a good content, may himself need mentoring for music from the latter. Therefore, mentorship is a role, not a defined position. However, while one harnesses his leadership and mentoring skills, he or she might face conflicts while working for the same goal.

    Negotiation and Conflict Management

One of the most underrated professional attribute that people often neglect, is the art of negotiation. Whether there is a dispute with the seniors, colleagues, juniors, or even the customers, the art of negotiation always helps.

Compensating your ideas may feel bad, however, one needs to understand the need of the situation, and comply with the best possible alternative to choose from. It may be difficult to accept or make someone do the same, but one needs to understand, or should have the ability to make others understand that the conclusion may not always be in his/her favour. To overcome this, one needs to develop the management skills.

Project Management – Jumping directly to a conclusion without considering all the possible factors affecting the decision, may lead to possible disintegration of your relations, leading to a wrong approach, and consequently, degrading the quality of your target. The attribute of managing a project ranges from developing the ability to strategise the overall procedure, the analytical and problem-solving skills to monitor and to make relevant changes, and finally, competence to execute the plan.

While managing a project, it is always advisable to take the help of respective experts of the different fields, involved in a project. Even if one is comfortable and competent enough, a different set of brain can always increase the productivity.

    Productive Meeting Management

Meetings, gatherings and brainstorming, everything is important if someone wants to excel the growth. However, a fruitful meeting is the one in which all the members are well-versed and prepared to contribute to the objective.

While a meeting is conducted, one needs to ensure that all the aforementioned points are followed, follow the LSRW skills. (Listen to the different arguments, Speak about your views, Read and analyse the point made, Write down the necessary points).

A productive meeting can also treated as the final step to examine one’s professionalism.

Being professional is not just about wearing a coat or tie, or possessing a college degree or a noted title. It revolves around how you conduct yourself, and follow the core values of competence, integrity, and respect.
