Games – Day One on the Gold Coast
After the blistering opening to the event, athletes challenge for medals on day one of the Commonwealth Games.
1. QBR visits Alice Springs
“It’s a tradition that celebrates community pride and that shows us how important a role sport plays to build our great community, which is why we’ve chosen to embrace the Baton’s visit wholeheartedly. And it means Alice Springs will play an important part in the largest multi-sport event to be staged in Australia in a decade”, said Mayor Ryan.
2. First medal goes to Flora Duffy
Women’s Triathlon favourite Flora Duffy claimed the first gold medal of GC2018 at Southport Broadwater Parklands.
The world number one completed the race in a record time of 56 minutes and 50 seconds. Duffy is also the first female Commonwealth Games gold medallist.
3. Remarkable Relay Swim
Australia’s women’s 100m relay team created yet another world record beating their own world record from the Rio Olympics in 2016. They made their to the Commonwealth Games gold medal.
4. Schoeman prides South Africa
South Africa’s first ever triathlon gold medal at a Commonwealth Games was won by Henri Schoeman. A happy and joyful Schoeman raised his right index finger to the air and then two arms aloft as he crossed the finish line, kissing the winning tape to celebrate his win!
5. Royals at the Commonwealth Games Village
Prince Charles and wife Camilla visited the CWG village on Thursday along with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy on the second day of their visit to Queensland.
